An original photograph from World War I, acquired in a large estate lot. Type & Size: A 5.5×3″ original photograph. Condition: Original to the era and in good to fair antique condition; may have missing portions, age wear, smudging, corners may have slight damage or some light creasing. Please see photos. The photograph depicts a vast stockpile of artillery shells neatly arranged in rows on a grassy landscape. The scene appears to be situated near a small rural dirt road lined with trees, leading towards a few buildings in the distance. The landscape is hilly, and the trees are bare, suggesting a winter or early spring setting during World War I. The photo was taken on February 1, 1919, as indicated by the handwritten date on the photo. The artillery shells in the photograph are a crucial element of World War I warfare, serving as ammunition for the heavy artillery used extensively during the conflict. This image captures the logistical preparations behind the Front lines, showcasing the immense scale of munitions required to sustain prolonged artillery bombardments which were characteristic of trench warfare. The stockpiles represented essential resupply points that supported the numerous battles fought on the Western Front. Text visible in the photograph includes the caption: “2-1-19 PHOTO SECTION NO.5” and the date and year: “1919”. These notations seem to be indicators of the date the photo was taken and potentially the unit responsible for its capture.
