Robert Hogg Nisbet, American, 1879-1961, Etching with Drypoint, “Through the Willows, No. 2”, 1959, first prize graphic arts, Salamagundi Club award, image size: 10 3/4 X 13 3/4 inches, pencil signed, framed Though he was born in Providence, Robert Hogg Nisbet (1897-1961) is most closely associated with his adopted home. In the early years of the 20* century, he began summering in Old Lyme and ultimately made the move to Kent, where he founded the Kent Art Association, which still exists today. Nisbet was a teacher at Brown University and at the Art Students League in New York. Best known for his landscape paintings and etchings, his work can be found in the collections of Yale University, The Metropolitan Museum of Ar!, The New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian. Nisbet first made an etching called “Through the Willows” in 1932. It won a prize from the Society of American Etchers. He made a second “Through the Willows” more than a quarter century later, in 1959. which is the piece in this auction It too won a prize, this time from the Salmagundi Club. The image is actually called “Through the Willows, Number 2.”
