A sophisticated antique American Victorian late 19th century quadruple-silver plate pickle castor service set with a dark amber jar and ornate silver-plated decorative stand, lid and serving tongs. circa 1890 Pickle castors are glass jars (in pattern glass and colored art glass) fitted in an elaborately designed silver-plated frame and matching silver-plated lid. Some castors including this wonderful specimen also have matching silver-plated tongs. They were used to serve pickles, pickled vegetables and fruits, sugar cubes, and various other delicious delicacies. It was considered the height of elegant dining to have a pickle castor on the table — or two. Dimensions: (approx) 11.75″ High, 5.5″ Wide, 4.5″ Deep Great original antique condition. Presents splendidly, enhanced by nicely aged patinated silver-plate with scattered spots of oxidation and tarnish that adds to the antique character and sophisticated charm.
