This is a rare antique solid steel WIRE GAUGE. 5” long. 1 3/4” wide. Made in Trenton, New Jersey, by the ROEBLING COMPANY. Inventor and Largest American manufacturer of wire rope (steel cable) in the second half of the 19th Century and through most of the 20 th Century. John Roebling was the inventor of wire rope, and his company produced the cable for the BROOKLYN BRIDGE and the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE, as well as. A host of other suspension bridges. This rare tool was produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, and is clearly signed ROEBLING. The gauge markings of 12 to 20 are faint but visible.
