Britannia was built as a DC ship with a voltage of 225 using a two wire system (not earth return). This board has live terminals and would have been quite capable of killing the unwary. The board was fed by three steam turbogenerators of 500 kW each and a 270 kW diesel generator. There was an emergency diesel generator of 60 kW in a separate compartment above the water line and also a battery to carry essential circuits for up to 30 minutes. A few AC devices were supplied by DC/AC motor generator sets.
