Founded during the last few months of WWI in 1918 by Lord Trenchard out of the original Royal Flying Corps, the RAF initially comprised the Air Battalion of the British Army’s Royal Engineers amalgamated with their naval equivalent the Royal Naval Air Service. The RAF played a pivotal role during WWII, operating at its peak during the conflict from many fronts and deploying over a million service men and women, during which its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain, has made it a worldwide legend. Post World War II, the RAF has also played many parts and is still a formidable peacekeeping force, now operated mostly from its 60 bases in the UK, although four long established overseas bases are still fully operational. The RAF has seen and been part of the whole spectrum of aircraft evolution, from the early bi-planes to today’s supersonic machines. Our five piece set of models, each in RAF livery, pays tribute to the land and airborne sections of the Royal Air Force over the past 100 years. Supermarine Spitfire Designed by R.J.Michell to meet a British Air Ministry specification, the Supermarine Spitfire first flown on March 5th, 1936. With its combination of beautiful fighter design, the excellent performance of its Rolls-Royce Merlin powerplant and firepower provided by twin cannons and four machine guns, the Spitfire became an unrivaled symbol of victory. The Spitfire had 40 major variants and was built in greater numbers than any other British aircraft of the time.
