Ipomoea leptophylla is a deciduous perennial vine/shrub in the Convolvulaceae family. Its native range is from the western-central United States. Familiar names include Morning Glory, Bush Morning Glory, Man Root, Bush Moon Flower, and Old-Man-of-the-Earth. Unlike most vining morning glories, this morning glory is not a vine but a bush. It grows naturally in plains, meadows, prairies, savannas, dunes, and roadsides. It can grow to around 1-3 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide from a tuber. The tuber helps this bush to be drought-tolerant. The leaves are heart-shaped or three-lobed and linear. The slightly fragrant flowers are 3 inches across and funnel-shaped with a dark purple throat. It prefers to grow in full sun and part shade with sandy or gravel soil and little water needs. It is a hardy Morning glory, tolerating temperatures as low as -25F. Zones 4-10 Germination Nick, the seed coat with a knife tip or rub seeds with sandpaper to improve germination. After nicking the flower seeds, place them in a bowl and soak them overnight in warm water. Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic, and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
