Cannot be shipped to Washington State Cytisus scoparius is a species of Deciduous shrub in the Fabaceae family. Common names include Scotch Broom, Broomtops, Common Broom, European Broom, and Irish Broom. Grow in somewhat fertile, dry to medium, well-drained soils and is drought tolerant. Growing 8 feet high and wide with yellow blooms, it is like the full sun. The fruit is a flattened, pea-like, green seed pod 2″ long with hairy margins. Pods mature to brown/black in fall and will pop open when ripe, exploding and ejecting seeds several yards away. It was introduced into the U.S. in the early 1800s as an ornamental shrub for erosion control. Plants have generally proved to be less aggressive in the East than in the West, where they are listed in several states as invasive weeds. Zones 5-8. Germination Pre-soak stored seed for 24 hours in warm water, then cold stratify for one month and sow in a cold frame. The seed usually germinates in 4 weeks at 68F. Seedlings should be potted up after the second leaf completes. Plant in the permanent positions in late summer if they have grown sufficiently. Otherwise, wait until late spring of the following year.
