The Sputnik-402 cassette tape recorder was produced by the Kharkov Proton plant starting in 1974. The Sputnik-402 model is a modification of the Sputnik-401 model and has a number of distinctive features: improved appearance; a newly developed layout of components and parts, allowing the control elements to be placed on the front panel; a transformerless amplifier circuit was used, which reduced distortion to 4% and increased output power; and sound quality was improved thanks to the use of the 0.5GD-30 loudspeaker. The Sputnik-402 tape recorder is a portable device housed in a plastic case. The bottom of the case is covered by a lid with a compartment for six 343 batteries. The tape transport mechanism (TTM), amplifier board, bracket with sockets for connecting the power supply, remote control cord, microphone, pickup, receiver, television, external amplifier, as well as the bracket with recording and volume level controls, bracket with recording and power level indicator, and speed switch are all mounted on a stamped chassis, which is attached to the case. There is a removable handle for carrying. The tape transport mechanism is the same as in the Sputnik-401 tape recorder.
