Since this image failed to sell twice, let’s flip the script. Literally. Let’s flip this portrait over in its case and watch as a “Readymade” surfaces, a common object that, when yanked out of context, becomes a work of Modern art. In an oddly satisfying way the back of this daguerreotype is far more interesting than the front, which shows a somber portrait of a young woman. The new image, which was buried behind the old portrait, definitely has post-modern resonance and is loosely akin to a Rothko painting: it’s non-representational, just a series of nesting frames that show absolutely nothing. Not that I’m advocating for this sort of read, but think about it, how many daguerreotypes are interesting on both sides of their plates? The way that candy-apple red rectangle looks deliberately painted is intriguing. And the way it’s been offset inside the case. Perfect. Oh and let’s not forget the other subject of this listing (who’s really just an afterthought) the young woman with that wavy, vertiginous neck tie of hers. Mmmmmn. Sealed as you can see.
