Used for CMOS battery backup on many vintage motherboards and for PLC and other devices. Dimensions: Diameter/Height = 15.5mm (excluding pins). Length = 19mm. If the application is for motherboards, these are the standard dimensions of CMOS batteries on vintage motherboards. If for other applications, such as PLC, these are the standard dimensions for NiCd and NiMH rechargeable 3-cell batteries of this voltage and 60mAh to 80mAh capacity. Perfect drop-in replacement for old NiCd 60mAh batteries. 3.6 volt, 80mAh. NOTE: 80mAh is the charge storage capacity — 33% higher capacity than old NiCd 60mAh. The mAh rating has no effect on the circuit. It’s a very common misconception that a higher mAh rating than specified could overpower the device. If you’re worried about that, please study Ohm’s Law: Current = Voltage / Resistance. Voltage is set by the battery, and resistance is set by the device, meaning that at at any given voltage the resulting current (amps) is determined by the device. The battery mAh rating refers to storage capacity — mAh is an abbreviation of milliamp-hours, which the total amount of current the battery can provide over time. 80mAh means the battery, when fully charged, can provide 80mA for one hour, or 40mA for two hours, and so on. Think of a higher quality AA cell vs a lower quality one… still the same voltage, but the better battery probably has a higher mAh rating and can provide power longer before exhaustion. Another example: a 1500w toaster oven uses almost the maximum current a typical 15A household circuit can supply. But that same 15A circuit, without any problem, supplies only a tiny current to your bedside clock radio. Again, the device determines the resistance, and therefore the current. If you feel this was TL:DR, I made the effort to write this because I’ve had so many customers concerned that replacing a 60aAh battery with an 80mAh battery might overpower the circuit. I’m trying to provide comfort that this is indeed not a problem. A battery in this configuration rated at 60mAh may be mislabeled to satisfy those wanting a 60mAh replacement. If labeled as NiCd, it’s either really old or a mislabeled NiMH — laws prohibit new production of NiCd batteries because cadmium is a toxic environmental hazard. Another note: The color of the insulating jacket has no meaning… typically green, but can be blue or any other color. To test before installation — just check its voltage with a DC voltmeter. Each of these batteries is verified to test at or above 3.6v before shipping. After installation, typical circuits provide a simple trickle charge to keep the rechargeable battery’s voltage topped off. I’ve found that these batteries can keep most of their initial charge for a year or longer while awaiting installation.
